Opportunity Overview

The Operations Hub is a new department within SFU’s Research Operations portfolio. Research Operations supports complex initiatives across the research life cycle, including funding development, implementation, compliance and long-term operational stewardship.

The Director will help establish how the new hub works and how it supports major institutional research initiatives. That makes the role both operational and organizational: the successful candidate must deliver projects while building governance and operating models that can be reused.

Key Responsibilities

The Director provides senior leadership for complex research infrastructure and institutional research initiatives where strong governance, financial discipline and strategic judgment are required.

The role advises senior research leaders on feasibility, risk, institutional fit and long-term sustainability and helps translate ambiguous or high-level goals into practical delivery models.

The Director mobilizes expertise across faculties, administrative units and external partners and leads a multidisciplinary team. Building scalable operating structures and clear accountability is a major part of the position.

Education and Experience

SFU asks for a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline such as Business Administration, Public Administration or Engineering and eight years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The experience should demonstrate strategic leadership, financial and operational risk management, governance, organizational design and the ability to manage high-value multi-year initiatives.

Leadership Skills

The job requires strong relationship building and influencing across organizational boundaries. The Director must be comfortable advising senior executives and working with researchers, administrators, funders and external partners.

Candidates should also show experience leading multidisciplinary or matrixed teams, especially in situations where deadlines are compressed and different stakeholders have competing priorities.

Salary and Benefits

The published pay range is CAD 132,149-170,980 annually. SFU notes that normal hiring typically occurs between the minimum and midpoint depending on job knowledge, qualifications and experience.
