Key Responsibilities
The specialist conducts comprehensive fitness and health assessments and counselling sessions using Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
The job organizes specialized testing for special populations, sports organizations and corporate clients and teaches group fitness formats such as spin, aquatics, muscular strength and endurance, HIIT and boot-camp classes.
The position can also design fitness classes that include academic components and liaise with physicians or physiotherapists when medical concerns affect a client.
Facility responsibilities include monitoring equipment and fitness areas, completing records, answering inquiries and responding to security or emergency situations. The specialist may administer First Aid, CPR, AED and Oxygen when required.
Who Can Apply?
Applicants need at least a two-year diploma in physical education or another health-related field, although an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
MacEwan asks for at least six months of experience in a fitness work environment with group or specialty-class instruction and experience delivering workshops.
Candidates must be certified as a Personal Trainer through CSEP or ACSM and hold current Standard First Aid, CPR, AED and Oxygen Administration certifications.
Additional Certifications and Schedule
AFLCA group-fitness certification or an equivalent such as CanFit-Pro and resistance-training certification are considered assets.
The job is on campus. Primary shifts are weekday evenings from about 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and weekends from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with rotating schedules covering facility operations.
