BC Hydro Careers: Power Line Technician Pre-Apprentice Program

What Pre-Apprentices Do

Participants support line-truck operations and work as drivers and ground persons while learning the fundamentals of distribution construction, maintenance and operations.

Training can include climbing, safe use of tools and materials, bucket-truck work and assisting with installation or removal of poles, anchors, transformers and other line equipment.

The program gives candidates the chance to demonstrate safety, work habits and mechanical aptitude before progressing further in the trade pathway.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants need high school graduation and must meet the required English 12, Math 11 and Physics 11 course standards or accepted equivalents.

A Class 5 or higher driver’s licence with air-brake endorsement is required, while a Class 3 manual licence is preferred.

Normal colour vision and the physical ability to perform outdoor utility work are important.

Physical and Mobility Requirements

Power-line work can involve climbing and working at heights ranging from roughly 30 to 400 feet and working outside in changing weather conditions.

Candidates need to be willing to relocate around British Columbia during the pre-apprentice program and later apprenticeship stages as required by BC Hydro.

The position is safety sensitive and includes pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. Driving records and education documents are also part of the application requirements.
