FortisBC is hiring an Engineering Co-op, Materials/Standards student in Burnaby, British Columbia. The opportunity is an 8-month paid co-op starting in September 2026 and is listed by the employer as open until filled.
The expected hourly range is CAD 25.68 to CAD 28.70. FortisBC’s official student job page is active and provides the employer application route.
This co-op is a fresh internship for the additional batch and is different from the Distribution Projects co-op already included in the previous CSV.
Opportunity Overview
The Materials/Standards assignment gives a Mechanical or Chemical Engineering student exposure to the design and operation of FortisBC’s natural gas system.
Students work with engineers, managers and people from different departments, which gives the placement a broader view of how operating and engineering teams make decisions about utility infrastructure.
Available Position
- Position: Engineering Co-op, Materials/Standards
- Employer: FortisBC
- Location: Burnaby, British Columbia
- Status: Co-op Student
- Duration: 8 Months
- Start: September 2026
- Pay: CAD 25.68-28.70 per hour
- Posting End: Open until filled
Key Responsibilities
The student reviews standard design practices for natural gas facilities and pipelines and helps update material specifications, engineering guidelines and drawings.
Site visits are used to build practical understanding of transmission and distribution gas systems. The co-op also engages internal and external stakeholders when reviewing technical information related to new utility products and practices.
Students can complete engineering assessments, identify deficiencies or opportunities and prepare written reports or proposals for existing and proposed infrastructure.
The assignment also involves recommending process improvements and helping ensure that engineering work remains aligned with company and industry codes and standards.
Who Can Apply?
FortisBC is looking for a Mechanical or Chemical Engineering student, with third- or fourth-year students preferred. Enrollment in a formal co-op program is required.
The posting lists experience or knowledge of CAD and competence with Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Corporate-style report and memo writing experience is useful.
Applicants should be able to interpret mechanical and P&ID drawings of piping systems, communicate confidently and hold a valid BC driver’s licence or an equivalent licence from another province.
What Students Can Learn
This placement can help students connect engineering theory with utility standards, materials decisions and real infrastructure. Site visits give context to the drawings and specifications reviewed in the office.
Working with different teams can also build stakeholder communication and technical-writing skills, both of which are important for future engineering roles.
Pay, Term and Application Status
The expected range is CAD 25.68-28.70 per hour. The placement is full-time temporary student work for eight months beginning in September 2026.
FortisBC lists the posting end date as Open until filled, so there is no fixed application deadline. Students should apply while the official page remains active.

Tips for Applicants
Use engineering coursework strategically
Choose projects involving piping, mechanical systems, materials, process design or technical standards that connect directly with the placement.
Show technical writing
If you have written lab reports, design reports, memos or engineering recommendations, include that experience.
Mention licence and site availability
The co-op includes site visits, so state your valid driver’s licence and ability to work in Burnaby for the September 2026 term.
